Day 6: Thirty Days — 30 Ways: Travel with a friend
Sometimes I want to do everything alone — because I can be impatient and judgmental or, hypocritically, I don’t want to be rushed or judged.
To be successful, happy, and wealthy, you need a friend, mentor, guide, … someone to lean on. Someone to talk some sense into you when you are being too hard on yourself or losing your patience with the world…someone to guide you in a positive and productive direction.
Your mentor can be a best friend, business associate, therapist, partner…anyone that consistently demonstrates that they want you to improve yourself.
Cliche but true, misery loves company. If you are already doubting yourself, the draw of negative people is tempting. It is comforting to confide your worldly woes to others and have them reinforced as normal trials everyone has to suffer.
The necessity here is to secure a positive support person, and it isn’t always clear if you have chosen the right mentor. Sometimes someone is too sympathetic, too passive-aggresive, too much like us, too aggravating, etc…
So, how do we know we have found the right mentor? The person you choose should have qualities you admire, a forward-thinking outlook, a knack for listening, and an ability to provide constructive feedback.
An additional way to grow your support network is to join a group of like-minded people. We can’t see people in real life (currently), but we can participate in online groups. Over the years, I have joined facebook groups for readers, writers, success-seekers, and other interesting folks.
Once you are immersed in situations where you can express yourself to others that understand and support your goals, you will build more inner strength and motivation. Instead of thinking about what others are doing, you will be doing the things that bring you inspiration and fulfillment.
The more time you spend on your own growth, the more you will thrive. The driving force behind 30 Days — 30 Ways is my own desire to grow. We all have our own reasons to be our best. My children compel me to continually reflect and improve so I can lead by example.
These times have presented so many new and unprecedented mountains. Each day I post is a day that I practice this thirty-day process; each day I hope my impact goes beyond the Medium and improves my readers' lives.
